The district strives to recognize students for academic achievement in all content areas. Students may be eligible for the following awards /honors if they meet the criteria: Honor Roll
It is possible for a student to place on either the High Honor Roll or the Merit Honor Roll.
All courses, with the exception of Physical Education and courses taken pass/fail or audit are computed for honor roll status. A student who has dropped subjects or has incomplete grades on his/her report card is not eligible for the honor roll.
Excelsior (Morris Hills HS)/Summa (Morris Knolls HS) Awards
- HIGH HONOR ROLL: An average of 93 or higher is required for placement on High Honor Roll (no grade below 85) after weighting for honors and Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate courses.
- MERIT HONOR ROLL: An average of 87 or higher is required for placement on Merit Honor Roll (no grade below 80) after weighting for honors and Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate courses.
These awards were devised to recognize the academic achievement of students who have achieved an overall average of 90.0 or better with no rounding (Classes of 2018, 2019, and 2020) and 93.0 or better with no rounding (Class of 2021 and beyond) for one entire academic year. Students maintaining an average of 90.0 or better with no rounding (Classes of 2018, 2019, and 2020) and 93.0 or better with no rounding (Class of 2021 and beyond) for the freshman, sophomore, junior and seniors years will be awarded a Medallion at graduation. The calculation for the Excelsior/Summa Awards for senior year will occur at the conclusion of the 3rd marking period. Academic Recognition Dinner
Seniors at each high school whose class rank is numbers 1-20 in their graduating class will be honored at a dinner in the spring of their senior year. Valedictorian/Salutatorian
The two graduating seniors at each high school with the first and second highest ranked cumulative grade point averages will be honored annually. The calculation of the first and second ranked students will occur at the conclusion of the 3rd marking period senior year. To be considered for this honor a student must be enrolled at Morris Hills High School or Morris Knolls High School for a minimum of two academic years. If the mathematical difference between the two top ranked students is less than .1 (one tenth), the two students will be declared co-valedictorians. In this case NO salutatorian will be named.
